November 2002

Welcome to the November 2002 hibbets.net Newsletter. Things are finally starting to slow down. I've completed some projects that I have been working on for some time and I started some new, smaller ones. Wolfpack football has been a let down in the beginning of November, but ended with a huge win over Florida State. The Giants show signs of life, then signs of disappointment. The search for a new job begins so more website work will have to be put on hold. If you haven't heard, Alcatel has decided that they no longer require my services and I will be laid-off on December 23, 2002. MB and I almost have all of our Christmas shopping done, and MB wrapped all the presents already! The Christmas Tree went up over Thanksgiving and the Thanksgiving meal that MB and I prepared was over filling. Hope you had a Happy Thanksgiving, enjoy this month's newsletter.

Headlines

Saturday, November 2, 2002 - Yellow Jackets Sting Wolfpack's Undefeated Season Another typical tailgate Saturday - the phone is ringing off the hook and we are trying to pack the Jeep with all of the tailgating essentials. Today, the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets are in town to face the 9-0 Wolfpack. MB and I arrive at the fairgrounds and meet Rob, Chris, and Carrie at the AGR Fraternity tent. It's also homecoming for NC State today so a lot of activities are planned. MB and I grill up some hot dogs and enjoyed the clear, brisk afternoon. Game time! The temperature's going to drop into the low 40's once the sun goes down so we packed some warm clothing, suited up, and marched to the stadium in the sea of red and white that was already on it's way. The Wolfpack played outstanding defense with a goal line stance that held GT to a field goal and other amazing plays that prevented them from scoring even more. However, the lack of offense and special teams prevented the Pack from coming out of Carter Finley 10-0, they lost to the Yellow Jackets 24-17, and dropped to a 9-1 record.
Sunday, November 3, 2002 - Sunday at the Saucer A small friendly gathering for some North Carolina pints at the Flying Saucer was the event of the evening. The Pumpkin Ale's started flowing when Jesse, Courtney, and Amy joined Merri Beth and me! I was stoked to have the Giants game on Sunday night football. They were playing Jacksonville and beat them 24-17. The gang was glad to hang out with each other for a few beers on a low-key night. It was very relaxing and the colder weather changes your beer taste buds, at least they do for me. We enjoyed some new Winter Brews from the Carolina brewing company in addition to the Rock Creek & Cottonwood Pumpkin Ales.
Tuesday, November 4, 2002 - Get out and Vote! Today started with my routine walk around Lake Johnson with Dot and Jesse. Dot has joined us on our walks again after finding out from the Vet that she had a false pregnancy. Better luck next time, right! We completed the 3-mile lap around the lake and then I dropped Dot off at the house while I went to vote. After casting my ballot, I went home and prepared for Steve Long to come over. We finalized some things for his website, upwardsoulstice.com. After Steve left, I wrapped some things up and took an easy night with some new graphics and some clean-up items for the launch tomorrow.
Wednesday, November 6, 2002 - 3, 2, 1, Launch Upward Soulstice Today was the big day, one that I've been waiting for since starting this project several weeks ago. Steve came over at lunchtime. I took him through a real time order in his store and completed the process by paying with PayPal. Steve liked what he saw and after finalizing some email issues, I launched the website live! Upwardsoulstice.com is born!

Time to celebrate! I cooked dinner so that by the time MB got home and was done working out at the gym, we were ready to eat, then head out to the Saucer. Ben, Amy, and Courtney met us there for keep the glass nite. Tonight's featured beer was Lost Coast 8-Ball Oatmeal Stout. A little heavy for most people, but the glass was cool! After we put that down (and not soon enough for most of us), we started hitting the "Swill for a Bill" beers. All Miller Lite, Bud Light, Foster's, and Shiner Bock drafts are only a $1.00 for the month of November (Monday through Friday). Well, the Saucer did us right and we headed over to Jillian's to meet Jesse. We hung out at the bar downstairs at Jillian's while waiting for things to heat up on the dance floor. I even got a game of air hockey against Amy. Jesse and Courtney even played a round, although it wasn't very pretty. You'll laugh at this, but the PBR's went on sale for 50 cents, so we were buying them like there was no tomorrow. We were bummed because the newly remodeled dance floor must be 21 and up now because no one was there? There were plenty of people dancing on the beach area, but the heaters just don't keep it warm enough. MB and I ended up leaving and we took Ben back because it was his night to party. MB was the designated driver and got us home safely. Thanks MB for being safe! I guess the Raleigh Police Officer didn't like me hanging my head out the window like Dot as we were leaving downtown, huh?
Saturday, November 9, 2002 - Fear The Turtle Time for the Pack to bounce back today, but we can't fear the Turtle. The Wolfpack traveled up to College Park in Maryland to face the hot Terrapins. I had to work so I watched the first half then went into work and listened to the second half. NC State had a chance to win it on the last drive but came up short and the Maryland Terrapins barely came out with a win beating the Wolfpack 24-21. Not only did the Wolfpack lose the game but, they suffered key injuries to T.A. McLendon and Jericho Cotchery. After work, Jesse and I joined the girls, MB, Amy, and Courtney, at East Village. Margaritas were one of the Saturday night specials, so I enjoyed one!
Monday, November 11, 2002 - Veteran's Day
Japanese Maple
JC Raulston Arboretum
MB and I both had the day off, something that we don't get to enjoy that much. We slept in and were well rested to face the day. After fixing some lunch, we went to the JC Raulston Arboretum and enjoyed the beautiful displays they had growing. The weather was misty and rainy and didn't allow us to enjoy the entire arboretum. We decided to visit again on another day. We got the ideas that we needed for our home landscaping, which was the main reason why we went. However, if any of you guys out there need to take a girl to a romantic setting, HINT HINT, take her here!
After the rain started to pick up, we drove over to Crossroads 20 and got some tickets to see 8-Mile. We both enjoyed the movie about rap star Eminem and how he made his way to stardom in Detroit. I was hoping to find out more about D-12, but the movie focused more on Eminem. After the movie, MB and I came home, grabbed some quick dinner and rendezvoused at the Saucer for a few pints. The night was perfect for sitting outside so we grabbed a table on the patio and Holly was our beer goddess. We got a phat spot for the Passat, right next to our table. The night started getting chilly, so we finished up and called it a night.
Wednesday, November 13, 2002 - Jason the Toolman! Finally, I'd been working on this all week. I had purchased some 11x14 picture frames on sale at AC Moore and some different color mattes. A few weeks ago Big-K (formerly known as K-mart), ran a 2-for-1 special on 8x10 enlargements. I had about 16 done including pictures of the Ocracoke Lighthouse, pictures from Barbados, some surfing pictures, and some amazing life size Hibiscus pictures. I got a new stud finder from Lowe's and it helped me hang up all my new pictures around the house. In addition to that, I got two new shelves to display our pint glass collection. They gave me some trouble but I eventually got them level and installed. Finally, I got some new corner shelves installed in the front of the house next to the downstairs bathroom. I put them where plants can enjoy the abundance of light that comes in from the front window. Merri Beth put an African Violet and an Amaryllis on the new shelves. Handy man work done, up, up, and away!

Amy's car broke down today at the unemployment office. I met her over there after she dropped Courtney off at Pier 1 and borrowed her bug. She said her radiator light came on and when she poured in new radiator fluid it leaked everywhere underneath her car. I brought some tools and jacked the car up. I found the spot where the radiator fluid was leaking from but couldn't find the hose that it was supposed to be connected to. We came back to my house and called a tow truck and Amy got a hold of her mechanic. She got her car towed and got the car into the shop.

Amy didn't feel like going out tonight, being bummed about her car breaking down. Jesse joined MB and I at the Saucer where we exchanged rounds of pool and got to know a new waitress, Melissa. Jesse and I agreed, "My God Melissa's got a fabulous body!" A little line from Austin Powers. Melissa had this sexy plaid skirt on with knee-high socks. "Do you want another beer?"
Thursday, November 14, 2002 - Reggae Night One My day started off with a walk at Lake Johnson with Jesse and Dot. The day was so nice, that Jesse and I decided to ride bikes later on. After lunch, I loaded up the bike on the Passat and drove over to Lake Park. We did 2 laps around Lake Johnson including an extra 2 miles on the Gorman Street Greenway. We totaled 8 miles for the day on our bikes, I guess the change in weather doesn't allow us ride the length we did during the summer. Later that night, we got the gang together and hit up Reggae night at Shammy's. MB and I picked up Jesse while Amy & Courtney met us at Shammy's later. Red Stripe was on special, but I started hitting the Miller Lite pitchers before too long. MB was driving tonight, so I had nothing to worry about! Donovan and the Posse kept the Reggae jams going until we decided to roll out.
Saturday, November 19, 2002 - 3 In A Row Are you surprised? After starting out 9-0 the Wolfpack went to UVA with a mission after dropping 2 straight. The weather was rainy and drizzly and the game came down to the last play as NC State dropped a game-winning touchdown in the end zone. Not only had their hopes of breaking their 2 game losing streak been broken, but they drop 3 straight and lose to the Virginia Cavaliers 16-9. NC State would fall out of the top 25 and now have to prepare for the next game in Raleigh against Florida State.
Sunday, November 17, 2002 - Giant Win and a Swift Trip At work today, I had to "watch" the Giants game on the Internet with Gamecast. The "Deadskins" (as Dave Bunch likes to say) were in Giants Stadium today. A gruesome battle in more misty weather kept the game close. My dad was actually at the game today, on a whim of course and after a 9-hour drive. The Giants beat the Redskins 19-17 and take a hold on second place in the new NFC East, one game behind the Eagles. After work, I loaded up my surfboard, wetsuit, and an overnight bag and drove to the Outer Banks. The surf was supposed to be rocking tomorrow! Instead of going through Elizabeth City like I normally do, I took 64 East all the way to go over the new bridge connecting NC mainland to Roanoke Island (Manteo). I got kind of bummed when I hit the new bridge and saw the wind was howling Northwest 15-25 knots (potentially killing any surf). I did get stoked on a new time record, 3 hours and 20 minutes from Raleigh to the OBX!
Monday, November 18, 2002 - Outer Banks Fall Surf Session I got up semi early, considering that I got in late last night, to check the surf. I knew that high tide was in the morning and the wind was already holding the surf back and tearing it apart. I checked First Street and saw chest to head high surf, but there was way too much water for a morning session. I went back and grabbed some lunch and took a nap. Later on, I got up with Tony and Melissa. I checked out some of their wedding and honeymoon pictures while waiting for Brad and Tony to get their act together. After gathering our own surf crowd, Eric, Brad, and myself got in Tony's truck and headed down south. We check the surf at Pea Island and decided to go back and surf at Nags Head. The wind was lighter in town and we ended up surfing at Enterprise Street in Nags Head. The surf was solid chest high and the water was in the low to mid 60's. Too bad the air temp was 55 and dropping as our evening session saw a beautiful moon rise surrounded by blue skies fading to orange, pink, and purple. I caught a handful of waves during our evening session and Tony was sitting on the beach watching it all since he left his wetsuit at the house. I'm very fortunate to have friends and surf that I can always depend on!

After surfing and slipping out of my wetsuit in the cold air, I grabbed some dinner and headed back to Raleigh. Once getting back in town, I showered and met the crew at the Saucer. I was stoked to see my name on the top ten list with only 18 beers left to go in order to get my plate. I meet Courtney, Amy, Craig Pelletier, Craig May, MB, and Jesse at the back room at the Saucer. We tried not to talk about it, but Alcatel TAC was having a big meeting tomorrow and that's what was on our minds.
Tuesday, November 19, 2002 - "Lay-offs" Not a day that I want to reflect on, but the mandatory TAC meeting today wasn't good for some of the TAC Engineers. A total of 6 DSL engineers were told that they would be laid off on December 23, 2002, including myself. Some people who were laid off, deserved it, others didn't. I guess I'm more shocked than anything, because there are still people who are employed that don't deserve to be there. People whom I thought would get let go before I would. Mainly because I feel like I do more work than they do. Oh well! Alcatel has lost another valuable asset. I am taking it in stride and will use this as an opportunity to find something better. After January 15, 2003 (my 2-year anniversary) I was going to start looking for something else anyway. At least by getting laid off, I will get 9-weeks pay with benefits starting December 23 and get fully vested in my 401K. After hearing about the bad news (or good news depending on how you look at it), MB joined Pao, Jesse, and I at Royal China Buffet for some Chinese and Sushi for lunch. After lunch, I went home and started searching for jobs. That's basically what I did for the remainder of the day. I was kind of bummed, but I am going to look at this as good thing because I believe that everything happens for a reason.
Wednesday, November 20, 2002 - Cheering Up MB decided to take me out to Shammy's and the Saucer to cheer me up. We played Willie Wright Trivia and got a cool Sierra Nevada glass at 9 o'clock. We picked up Jesse and even got to see Margie and Mary who are Budweiser girls. After Trivia, we took Jesse home and MB and I went to the Saucer. We skipped out on the "Keep the Glass Nite" because we already had the featured beer, Steelhead Pale Ale, and we were really late for the 7 o'clock disbursement. Holly was our beer goddess and she was hanging out with us for a little bit. We learned that she wants to be a Radiologist and works at Western Wake Med. during the day while balancing classes at Wake Tech and her job at the Flying Saucer. We've gotten to know Holly little by little as we visit the Saucer (sometimes weekly, biweekly, or tri-weekly depending on our moods). I got a little closer to my plate tonight, only 12 more beers to go! (That is one reason why we are going so much this month, it's not cause we're drunks! Yeah, yeah I know, denial is the first stage.)
Thursday, November 21, 2002 - Comm Watch/Reggae Night Two More job searching today with a few good leads. I would like to thank everyone who has sent me a job listing, a link, and a name of someone who works somewhere. Every little bit helps and it gives me hope.

When MB got back from work and from working out, we headed up to North Raleigh to the RPD training center. Tonight there was a Fall Seminar for the Raleigh Community Watch Program sponsored by the Raleigh Police Department. It was very informative and they had 4 Community Watch Coordinators speak. Basically they told us how they run their programs, what makes them successful, how the communicate, and how much their community is involved. I saw Mildred & Mary Belle there from the Southwest Raleigh CAC and Jeannie & two other friends from our neighborhood attended. I wasn't aware the Jeannie is trying to start a Community Watch Program on Sierra Drive. She didn't know that I wanted to start one on our street. We are going to collaborate and try to make a larger Community Watch Program that includes all of our streets. We will be working together on getting the Pleasant Ridge Community Watch Program started so that we can begin to help crime prevention and make our neighborhood a community.

After the seminar, MB and I got thirsty. Tonight was MB's night to drive, so we drove over to Shammy's where Ben was already waiting for us. Jesse filed in later and the Reggae jams by Donovan and the Posse started shortly after. We were playing the trivia games throughout the night. Jesse and I traded off leads but fell to the other competitors at the bar. MB left early because she wasn't feeling that well. Jesse got me home safely and another Reggae night at Shammy's came to an end.
Friday, November 22, 2002 - The Chamber of Secrets Merri Beth left work early today to go to the eye doctor and pick up her new contacts. After that, she came home and we went to Crossroads 20 to see the new Harry Potter movie, The Chamber of Secrets. We both enjoyed the movie and the special effects, but agreed that the movie was long and drawn out. We came home and I grilled up some beef and made some side fixings for dinner. We got a call from Amy to come out to the Saucer. We almost didn't go because we realize that we've been going a lot lately, but opted to hang out with our friends. Amy, Craig, and Courtney were already there with another couple, Tim and Gretchen. The Saucer was packed, but I was able to grab a table for the group. I also saw Tim, Jeff, and Rashem hanging out with Holly, who had the night off, but was hanging out anyway. Going to the movies then to the Saucer helped get my mind off of being laid off this past week. Things will get better, 3 more closer to my plate!
Saturday, November 23, 2002 - Storm the Field
Goal Posts

The brisk morning made it hard to get going. MB went food shopping and I started getting all of the tailgate essentials ready for the Florida State game. Katie came over and we left our house shortly after noon. By the time we got to the fairgrounds, it was already packed. Luckily Steve and Nancy were already out there and saved us a spot on the fairgrounds near gate 9. I cranked up the grill and put the burgers on. I also heated up the Velveeta & Salsa mix for our Tostitos holiday chips. Steve and Nancy had some BBQ from the BBQ Lodge while we grilled our hamburgers. We ate and hung out
for a while then headed into the stadium for an amazing game against the Florida State Seminoles. At halftime, the score was too close to relax, 10-7. MB and I were very glad when Kevin & Todd Fischer came down from their seats to visit us during halftime. Kevin is completing his Masters at NC State this December and is purchasing a house with his wife Allison. Todd is still teaching and seems to be loving every minute of it. Now, back to the game. History was made today as the NC State Wolfpack became the only ACC team to defeat FSU two years in a row. Some of the students stormed the field with 8 seconds left on the clock, but officials and security had to clear them off in order to get the last play off. After that, MB, Lo-lo, and I joined the masses on the field and enjoyed this once in a lifetime chance. NC State had just beat FSU 17-7 and ruined FSU's hopes for winning the ACC Championship out-right, although with Maryland losing to Virginia today, FSU won the ACC title anyway. The celebration was amazing, the students as well as some football players took down the south end zone goal post fairly quickly. Then the "mob" decided to get the north end zone goal post. I was surprised when it fell in less than 30 seconds. MB, Katie, and I watched safely from the 50-yard line. The goal post was heading our way when MB and I reached out to touch it was it went on a victory lap around Carter Finley. Being on the field, high-fiving players, seeing both goal posts go down, and actually touching one of the goal posts was overwhelming, to say the least. I had to glance at the scoreboard again and again to make sure this was really happening. The victory over FSU set up NC State for a possible bid to the Gator Bowl or Peach Bowl and improved their record to 10-3 for the regular season.
Sunday, November 24, 2002 - The Texans Make Me Sick I had to drag myself to work today. The FSU game wore me out yesterday and I didn't feel like doing much. I got up and sent some emails out, some follow-up emails to some contacts for prospectus jobs. Then I got ready for work and went styling my Ike Hillard (88 Giants) Jersey. I watched the game at work via Gamecast and suffered through the struggling Giants offense. The Texans snuck out with the victory sending the Giants to 6-5 beating them 16-14. With the Redskins beating the Rams, the Giants are only one game ahead of them in the NFC East, but more importantly, if the Eagles win Monday night against the 49ers, then the Giants will be 2 games behind the Eagles. MB was hanging out at the house today and spent most of her time wrapping Christmas presents. If only she could be so prompt with her house chores (and the Christmas cards too)! Other than football, work proved to be fairly boring and slow. My body somehow managed to take a turn for the bad and my throat got really soar and began to swell. My tongue started to swell too and I had trouble talking. I left work early and went straight to bed after taking some heavy doses of medication. So maybe the loss to the Texans really did make me sick!
Monday, November 25, 2002 - Sick All Day I woke up and felt worse, my throat was killing me. I canceled my walk with Jesse and called Mike, my supervisor, and let him know that I probably wouldn't be making it in today. I got up and forced myself to drink some OJ. I occupied myself on the computer a while and found that NC State was selling pieces of the goal posts from Saturday to commemorate the 10-3 season. I bought a piece of history, figuring that if we didn't like it, we could always sell it on Ebay or something. I slept for most of the day then got up for a little bit when MB got home from work. I didn't have much of an appetite and neither did MB. I laid back down for a while and MB went out to the Saucer with Ben and Ann celebrating Ben's acceptance to Medical School. After the Saucer, they moved the party over to East Village 'til the wee hours, Ok 'til 12 o'clock or so. I managed to watch a little bit of Monday Night Football and saw the Eagles destroy the 49ers. Now they have a 2 game lead in the NFC East, but have lost their starting and back-up quarterbacks. I was feeling a lot better than earlier today, but I still went to bed early.
Thursday, November 28, 2002 - Thanksgiving Day
Caburr! Today was chilly in Raleigh, highs reaching the mid 40's and a slight breeze. MB and I started off our holiday with a walk around the neighborhood with little girl. After that, MB prepared the turkey while I did some gardening clean-up work outside. The hard freeze from last night pretty much ended any growth for the tomatoes and peppers that were still growing in the garden. Everything that might be edible was salvaged. After that, I pulled up all the marigolds that were left. I had about 20 stalks and they weren't the small kind either. These marigolds were the large varietal that reach 3-4 feet in height with flowers over an inch in diameter. Do you smell rosemary? Dinner
Thanksgiving Dinner
I potted a sprig of rosemary that had started to root next to the large rosemary bush that I have in the front. A few branches have gotten close to the ground and began to root themselves. I carefully removed the rooted sprigs and planted one in the back yard to see if I can get that to grow as well. The original bush that I have up front was purchased the spring we got the house (May 2001) and is now 4 feet high and growing like mad! The rosemary bush smells sooooo good too! I finally came inside and played a little football on N64. We broke your typical Thanksgiving Day activities. No football or parades on TV (beside football on the video game). Just turkey and margaritas! It's going to be a new tradition that takes over the world! Merri Beth prepared the rest of our Thanksgiving Dinner and I cut into my pumpkin cheesecake. We had turkey & gravy, broccoli casserole, and mashed sweet potatoes with Italian Red Wine and Margaritas. MB and I are thankful for many things, but most importantly, each other and family (even though we didn't spend Thanksgiving with our families). We would like to take this opportunity to thank you for reading the newsletter and being our friend. We value your friendship and hope that you enjoyed your Thanksgiving!
Friday, November 29, 2002 - Die Another Shopping Day Black Friday. The biggest shopping day of the year! I didn't get up early and hit all those great sales that all the stores are having. Remember that MB and I almost have all of our Christmas shopping done. We slept in and got up around 10 o'clock or so. MB prepared a wonderful breakfast of Biscuit's & Gravy. (Homer Simpson voice...) MMMMmmmm! Biscuit's & Gravy. Then we took Dot down to the park and let her play on the slides during our walk. When we got back from walking, we decided to go to the mall. We went over to Crabtree Valley Mall and went to Hudson Belk, PacSun, and Toys 'R' Us. The mall actually wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. After slipping out of Crabtree, we headed over to Crossroads in Cary. We visited the World Market and selected a few wines, a cool one called The Electric Reindeer topped our list. Next we dreadfully went to Pier One sitting at traffic lights through numerous cycles. We saw Courtney and set-up a movie date at 8:00 P.M. for James Bond - Die Another Day. MB and I went back to the house, heated up some leftovers, and put up the Christmas Tree. I strung lights and garland on the tree and MB prepared the ornaments. We met Courtney at the movies and enjoyed another classic 007 flick. Amazing cars, awesome stunts, and sexy women...oh wait, I had two sexy women sitting next to me in the

James Bond?
theater. Bonds got nothing on me - Gregg Cornetski in a tux [left]. You decide! After the action packed Bond film, Courtney went home and MB and I got back and finished decorating the tree. We had Tomorrow Never Dies in the DVD player while MB put ornaments on the tree and I put Christmas lights in the window. Tomorrow is supposed to be pretty nice outside, so MB and I might put the lights up on the house. Hopefully, National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation won't be reenacted at Hotel Ramsgate.
Sunday, November 30, 2002 - Outdoor Lights & Bulb Fever What an awesome day, the weather was warm and beautiful. We started off with a walk to the park and back with Dot. We got back and started testing Christmas lights. We planned out the strings of lights and got on the roof. MB scaled the steep part because I am a wus and being high up on a slippery surface isn't my kind of thing. We finally got all the lights up and got in the back yard. MB went bulb crazy and planted lots of Daffodils, Tulips, Hybrid Lilies, Water Lilies, and more! Spring time should be blooming. I installed another timer for the Malibu garden lights and put in another set. We have one more set to go (probably sometime in the Spring) and the garden path will be completely illuminated.
The day ran out on us so we took showers and went out to Wal-Mart and Lowes. We had to get some more gutter clips for the lights and I needed to pick up an outdoor drop cord. We got back from Garner and watched the Florida versus Florida State game on ABC over a delicious meal of NY Strip & Ribeye medley with leftover broccoli casserole, leftover mashed sweet potatoes, and some fresh corn bread muffins. FSU beat the living daylight out of the Gators while MB and I battled it out playing NC State-opoly. I think I won, but it doesn't matter, because we had fun! House
All lit up for the holidays!
